In Comfort

Silk floral arrangement The bathroom in feng shui means a place where water - symbolic of money - enters and leaves. It represents the occupants internal plumbing and finances.

In the Far East, we adapt to different bathing habit borne of our need to be frequently fresh from the tropical heat and humidity. We shower more than we actually soak in a bath tub. The bathroom is where we bare and pamper ourselves to reinforce our confident feelings.

Master's bathroom Master's bathroom

Left: White marble and grey-silver mirror clad the walls of this master's bathroom. The antique-silver ceiling boards matching the mirror solve the problem of painted ceilings in bathrooms. On top of the divider stand, hiding the water closet, is a bunch of silk orchids in an oxidized ceramic vase. Right: The washbasin counter's apron is of white vitro glass trimmed with polished brass matching the Kohler gold platted fittings. The curved marble shell is from the Philippines.

Elevated Jacuzzi Shower Compartment

Left: The architectural semi-circular wall in glass blocks dictated the look of this bathroom. An elevated Jacuzzi tub for two is dramatic and inviting although it may not be environmentally too friendly. I used beech wood as flooring to contrast the black polished granite surfaces. Gold leafed papier maché lotus leaves in white ceramic vase accentuate this uncluttered bathroom. Right: Separate shower compartments are now a must for well appointed bathrooms. Stainless steel frames the glass panels of the shower enclosure. The mirror over the twin basins has Hollywood style dressing lights. Red towels brighten the mood.

In the guest room glass shower panels with brass frames fit into an existing bathtub. The low storage cabinet has glass shelves to display a small collection of Chinese ceramics. The counter's overhead lighting is reflected in the corner mirror giving a nice optical effect.

Fabric-skirted Washbasin Counter Powder Room

Left: I was running out of budget and the inexpensive yet elegant solution I could think of to dress up an existing wash basin counter is to skirt it with fabric. Clear mirror walls visually enlarge this small bathroom. Powder rooms are extensions of the living areas. Right: This black and white marble lined vanity room has a wash basin counter with tiered marble top. A pair of wall mounted crystal lamps flanks the Italian mirror above the counter.

FROM THE READERS
"Your designs evoke a sense of creative tension between thought and feeling... One cannot help but breath a sigh at the sensitivity of each placement or be enthralled with the stillness and balance that one intuitively feels from what is seen."
Mark Anthony Perez, Manila, Philippines; Sept.'97
