Tools of Trade

One aspect of the professional work I enjoy and take time is the visual and abstract presentation of a design concept. By composing various materials that would articulate an idea or feeling, I am able to give a direct and intimate relationship to an assignment. Dale Keller toasting the opening of his new office. One of the most interesting presentation I did was with Dale Keller & Associates in 1974. I tried to imbue the total concept with a strong Chinese character. For this work, the firm promoted me to a Design Associate. Unfortunately, the proposed Marco Polo Hotel got aborted and became Ocean Center.

The three renderings for the bedroom concepts together with the corresponding material samples were housed in a specially made Chinese box wrapped in beige raw silk. For added suspense and drama to the presentation, I covered the renderings in matching silk to evoke the feeling of a Tibetan thanka.

The Cinnabar Scheme shows the bed with supporting night stands. The mirror columns flanking the headboard treatment provide verticality and illusion of height. They also serve as a housing for small directional reading lights instead of the standard bedside lamps. Custom designed fabric wraps the headboard panel that extends to the ceiling.

The Ivory Scheme shows the view of the bedroom looking to the bay window. Wooden lattice in Chinese pattern screen the windows. The wall covering is cork paper.

The Celadon Scheme shows another view of the bay window and the colored acrylic cantilevered ledge serving as dresser, luggage rack and TV stand. Another pattern for the lattice screen shows the variations of window configurations.
