A Garment Office

Lift Lobby & Entrance

The symmetrically designed entrance doors to this garment office are illumined by vertical strip lights enhancing the bleached wood finishes. Seen through the glass panels is a pair of large succulent plants in ceramic pots providing scale, visual barrier and aesthetic interest

The travertine marble flooring extends to the reception counter canopied by woven bamboo sticks. The carpeted seating area on both sides of the counter contrasts the hard marble floor.

Reception area

corridor corridor

In this open-planned office, the corridors leading to the different areas play an important role in the continuity of design. Corridors terminate in a focal point displaying various Asian artworks or bronze mirror to visually enlarge the space. Above left, the Chinese inspired storage cabinets have black lacquered frames with suede insets trimmed with polished brass.

Left: The corridor leading to the general staff area is lined with wooden bars to hang merchandise. Right: The Chinese painting of a tiger in a niche is auspiciously positioned in the corridor. To the Chinese, the tiger is second only to the dragon in terms of strength and power but is nonetheless a potent symbol of protection. The cabinet doors match the sliding window screens of the windows.

Conference rooms and displays The combination of materials creates a casual yet elegant working atmosphere to a conference room which also serve as a showroom. To store the fashion merchandise, I lined the room with closets that have decorative doors. There is a strong Oriental flavor in the design of the suede wrapped doors framed in black lacquer with brass appliqués. In contrast to the richness of the doors, I used corn matting bordered with marble for the floor. A simple Parsons style table has stainless steel legs that match the classic Bruer chairs.

Left : Work sheets pinned to the wall in an orderly manner animate this small meeting room. Pin boards are very useful in the office. For this room, I used a rubberized wall covering which does not leave pin holes. Around the marble topped table are stainless steel chairs with Chinese pattern on the back for a non office look. The niche above the telephone ledge is decorated with a Chinese bird cage - an inexpensive but interesting handicraft. Right: The design room.

Manager's office Creative Director's office

Above left: The managing's room is decorated with Indian paintings representing their business connection to that country. Right: The Fashion Merchandiser's room has typical furniture but with a different color scheme.

Seating area of the Manager's office with the Hong Kong harbour in the background

The itinerant chairman of this company requested for a simple no frills office. Instead of the usual office furniture, I used burnt-bamboo chairs which feels casual and relaxed. They harmonize nicely with the travertine table top and the natural grasscloth lining the walls. Behind the desk is a drawer ledge with an antique Chinese painting and a floral arrangement.

Seat cushions on a carpeted platform are upholstered in coral red printed glazed chintz. Right: Another view of the chairman's office facing a niche with glass shelves for personalia.
