Sunsets' Place
Watching sunsets is one of my greatest pleasures. The quiet that descends before night fall and the colors that paint the sky are both peaceful and exhilarating. In 1980 when I took a year sabbatical from Hong Kong, I had the opportunity to stay in my favorite location in old Manila.

The living room does not have the usual furniture but furnished instead with a tete-a-tete sofa specially made for reclining. I placed the sofa in the middle of the room so I could watch the spectacular and sometimes subtle sunsets of Manila Bay.
To deflect the harsh light, I painted a pointillist style artwork of sunset over an existing mirror panel. Another artwork, similar in style and theme, hangs on the other wall. The antique Burmese lacquer stand balances the green glazed ceramic pedestal.
I positioned the built-in bed in the middle of the room to enjoy the breeze coming from the other side of the apartment. The painted mirror columns highlight the grass cloth of the bed alcove walls. On a stand is an arrangement of dried fern leaves and pea pods. A Ching Dynasty Chinese painting blends with the arrangement. The bleached wood parquet matches the walls.
Along the angled windows is a multi-purpose seating ledge with loose cushions. On top of a cylindrical uplighter, I placed a pickle glass jar filled with fresh flowers. Simple but dramatic treatment like this can make a room look uncommon and interesting. A simple woven matchsticks blinds cover the windows.
FROM THE READERS "Thank you for sharing your Way. Our stories are quite the same, however, I follow the path of a Cook. The Cult of Idleness informs and guides me. Your website is a resorce for me to share this philosophy with my friends."
