My Mahayhay

"A good traveler is one who is ignorant of his destination
and the perfect traveler is ignorant of his point of origin"
Lin Yutang.

Down stream In my wanderings in our countryside, I also let myself loose or be lost to discover unknown places. One of my discoveries is the small and sleepy town of Mahayhay in Laguna Province. This lush and hilly town is about two and half hours drive south of Manila. Other than the ancient St. Gregory Church, completed in 1730, there are no obvious tourist attractions. However, since it is close to Mt. Banahaw, there is an abudant flow of water that streams through the town. The rocks and big boulders, the running stream and the tropical vegetation are the real attractions.

I shy away from public places that my offer some physical comfort but short of raw nature. To me there is no point in staying in a local hotel or resort because it defeats my sense of adventure. I will not exchange the positive feeling I get by sleeping on the ground for any mattress. It feels comforting to feel the heartbeat of mother earth and wake up to the refreshing sounds of nature. My camping gear including all the accoutrements, and my "Pathfinder" pickup is always ready to find that unbeaten and obscure path. Run your mouse over the pictures to read additional captions.

One of the first thing I do when I set the tent is to locate the best spot for it. Above, my blue tent is pitched by the edge of a ridge overlooking a lagoon and the river. The site is feng shui perfect as I face the water and the mountain behind me. Below, the terrain is rugged as mountain lands go, and the cool water of the river gush through the rocks and boulders along the watercourse in sweeping currents. I love to position myself between the big boulders to get a wonderfully energizing hydro massage.
