Tales of Buddha

Chujok finally loses the children and they make their way back to the palace of their grandparents, the King and Queen. When he hears their story the King is angry with Prince Vessantara but Jali explains the ultimate test of his generosity. The King finally understands and orders that Vessantara be brought back from exile. He then pays Chujok the agreed sum for ransom of his grandchildren. Chujok wastes the ransom money lavishly on wine and women and dies from over-indulgence.

7.Chujok's death
The central scene shows the royal children in the palace with the king paying the ransom to Chujok. The bottom scene shows Chujok reclining on silken pillows surrounded by pretty maidens and lots of food. This scene together with the men climbing the coconut trees with their exposed penises are rendered with lusty folk humour.

8.Return of Vessantara
The last painting of the Vessantara Jataka shows the climax of the story. The top depicts the royal family and their retinue in a forest hermitage with many elephants. They remained there for a month, feasting and being entertained until a smooth road has been prepared for them. The middle scene shows the royal family riding on the elephants returning home. The triumphal procession includes a cavalry of horses and foot soldiers. On the bottom section shows the entertainers and musicians with the royal family's party.
