OPEN HOUSE IN BALI

Relief work around the Balinese door adds subtle decoration to the plaster walls of the main pavilion.

Curved white wall defines the dining area. The table is Vos' own lotus leaf design and the chairs are Javanese.

Guests can shower al fresco in the open air bathroom. A high wall and optional rattan blinds provide privacy. A stone statuary serve as the focal point.

Vos also decided to make use of local techniques in the design of the open-plan living area. The dining table, which he designed, is of a hand-carved lotus leaf design. The room has a low enclosing wall with doorways and windows carved by local craftsmen. The view from the living area is stunning, taking in gardens, palm trees, tropical flowers and the sea. Guests can relax on brightly colored cushions watching kingfishers and tropical butterflies dart by.

Simplicity of design is continued in the guest bedroom where a wood carving over a mirror is the only decoration. The bedroom opens to the garden.
